Highgate Cemetery, a renowned landmark in the heart of London, recently became the focus of a critical ecological investigation and bat survey led by Ecology Group’s MKA team.
As the cemetery embarks on the development of its 30-year conservation and management plan, understanding the ecological value of its grounds is critical.
With a deep understanding of the vital role of bat populations within this unique urban ecosystem, MKA Ecology undertook a detailed bat activity survey. This initial assessment forms a crucial foundation for navigating the delicate balance between preserving the cemetery’s historical treasures, including the iconic Egyptian Avenue and the Circle of Lebanon, and addressing the ecological impacts of environmental challenges such as ash dieback, which necessitates careful tree management strategies.
The problem: Balancing conservation and environmental pressures
Recognising the ecological significance of the cemetery, particularly its bat populations, a comprehensive understanding of their activity and habitat is crucial for informed conservation planning. Balancing the need to maintain the cemetery’s unique character with the imperative to protect its biodiversity requires detailed ecological assessment and targeted conservation strategies.
The solution: A dual approach to bat conservation
Ecology Group, through our specialist division MKA Ecology, partnered with Highgate Cemetery to conduct a thorough ecological assessment focused on its bat populations.
Our approach involved a two-pronged strategy:

Detailed bat activity surveys
Our experienced ecologists conducted real-time monitoring along carefully designed transects within the cemetery.
This allowed for immediate identification and recording of bat species and their activity levels across different areas. Complementing this, we deployed Static Detectors for five nights each season to capture extended background activity, providing a more complete picture of bat presence over time.

Habitat Assessment
Parallel to the activity surveys, a detailed habitat assessment took placeto pinpoint areas of critical importance for bat roosting, foraging, and commuting.
By understanding the specific habitat requirements of the local bat species, we can tailor conservation strategies to effectively preserve and enhance these vital ecosystems.
Our initial surveys have confirmed the presence of several familiar urban bat species within Highgate Cemetery, including the common pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus), soprano pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pygmaeus), and noctule (Nyctalus noctula). This data provides a baseline understanding of the existing bat community.
The data gathered through these surveys and habitat assessments will directly inform Highgate Cemetery’s 30-year conservation and management plan, ensuring that the long-term protection of its bat populations is effectively integrated with the preservation of its historical and architectural significance.
