The Problem: Balancing development and ecology

Unit 440 of the Cambridge Science Park is looking to move beyond conventional development practices and create a space where ecological considerations are not secondary but rather the driving force behind the design. The solution: A landscape-led approach

The MKA Ecology team championed a landscape-led approach from the project’s inception, collaborating closely with the design team to integrate ecological principles into every aspect of the development. Our key strategies include:

  • Prioritising sustainable access: We advocated for a design that prioritised pedestrian and cyclist access over vehicular traffic. This approach promotes healthier lifestyles, reduces carbon emissions, and fosters a more tranquil and people-centric environment.
  • Integrating green infrastructure: We emphasised the creation of a central, open-air courtyard within the building. This green space serves as a biodiversity hub, bringing natural light, fresh air, and a variety of habitats directly into the heart of the development.
  • Enhancing ecological connectivity: We focused on creating seamless connections between the new development and the surrounding parkland. This integration blurs the boundaries between the built and natural environments, facilitating the movement of both people and wildlife.
  • Maximizing Biodiversity Net Gain: A core objective was to not only mitigate ecological impacts but to actively enhance local biodiversity. We developed detailed plans for the creation of diverse habitats, including:
  • Species-rich grassland (wildflower meadow) planting
  • Mixed scrub rain gardens
  • Swales for sustainable drainage
  • Extensive tree planting
